Model wearing a hand-drawn Batik Soga parang shirt in a Javanese heritage house

Batik Soga · Since 2007

The cloth remembers
what the court once wore.

The House

A batik house on Jalan Rajiman, in the merchant quarter of Laweyan — where wax, indigo and soga bark have been worked by the same families for five generations.

Every Soga piece begins as undyed primissima cotton and ends on a tailor's table. Between those two moments sit hundreds of hours of canting work — a single drop of hot wax at a time, no two lines identical.

Soga takes its name from the bark of the soga tree, whose dye gives Solo batik its warm brown depth. Our artisans wax, dye and boil each cloth up to seven times before it ever meets a pattern block.
